Your First Coaching Session: How to Make It Count

What to expect, and how to walk in ready

Your first coaching session is a fresh start. It’s the moment your assessment results, your goals, and your real work come together in one conversation, with someone whose only focus is helping you grow.

If you’re not sure what to expect, you’re not alone. Many people start coaching without ever having had a coach. The good news is that there’s no wrong way to show up. But a little preparation can help you get even more out of your first 45 minutes together.

What coaching is, and what it isn’t

Coaching isn’t a performance review, and your coach isn’t there to judge you. It isn’t mentoring, either. A mentor shares advice from their own experience. A coach helps you find your own answers through thoughtful questions, honest reflection, and practical tools.

Your coach doesn’t need to know the details of your job to help you. Coaching focuses on the human skills that carry across every role: how you communicate, lead, adapt, and follow through.

And while coaching supports your wellbeing, it isn’t therapy. It’s focused on your growth at work, and on moving forward.

What happens in your first session

Every coaching relationship is personal, but most first sessions cover the same ground:

Getting to know each other. Your coach will want to understand your role, your team, and what’s going on in your work right now.

Exploring your assessment results. You’ll walk through your baseline assessment together, not to diagnose, but to get curious about what stands out and why.

Clarifying your focus. You’ll talk about the core skill you chose and what’s behind it, and whether anything else feels important to explore.

Leaving with a next step. Most people finish their first session with a clearer sense of direction and at least one small action to try before they meet again.

How to prepare

You don’t need to prepare a presentation or have everything figured out. A few minutes of reflection beforehand is enough.

Revisit your assessment. Look back at your results and the “why” you wrote for your focus area. Notice what still feels true, and what might have shifted.

Bring a real situation. Think of one recent moment from work: a conversation that didn’t land, a project that felt stuck, or a win you want to build on. Real examples make coaching practical from the start.

Think about what success looks like. Picture yourself a few months from now. What would you be doing differently? How would you feel at work?

Find a quiet space. Choose somewhere you can speak openly without interruptions. Coaching works best when you can be fully present.

Questions worth bringing

Not sure where to start? Any of these can open a great conversation:

  • What do my assessment results say about how I see myself?
  • Where am I getting in my own way?
  • Which strengths could I lean on more?
  • What’s one change that would make the biggest difference in my work right now?
  • How will I know I’m making progress?

Make it yours

The best coaching sessions are honest ones. Everything you share with your coach is confidential. Your organization only ever sees insights combined across many people, never your individual conversations. That means you can speak openly about what’s really going on, including the things that feel messy, uncertain, or unfinished.

You’re also in the driver’s seat. If something isn’t resonating, say so. If you want to go deeper on a topic, ask. Your coach is there to support the growth that matters to you.

After your session

Before the week takes over, take a few minutes to lock in what you learned:

  • Write down your biggest takeaway and your next step.
  • Book your next session while your momentum is strong.
  • Try your action, and notice how it goes. That’s what you’ll build on next time.

Your growth starts here

Your first session is the beginning of a journey built around you: your goals, your challenges, and the leader you want to become.

Bring your curiosity. Bring your questions. Bring your whole self.
