How to Build a Stronger Relationship With Your Manager

Few relationships at work matter as much as the one with your manager. When it’s strong, you’re more likely to feel supported, get useful feedback, and have someone in your corner. When it’s strained or distant, even good work can feel harder.

It’s easy to assume the quality of that relationship is entirely up to your manager. But strong relationships are built from both sides. Bravely’s approach to building effective work relationships centers on four elements: flexibility, awareness, communication, and empathy. Here’s how each one can help.

Flexibility: Adapt to how they work.

Every manager has their own style. Some prefer quick Slack updates, others detailed emails. Some want to be looped in on everything, others prefer to hear only about decisions and roadblocks. Pay attention to how your manager likes to communicate and work, and adjust where you can. If you’re unsure, ask directly.

TRY SAYING

“What’s the best way to keep you updated on my work? I want to make sure I’m giving you what’s most helpful.”

Awareness: Understand their priorities and pressures.

Your manager is juggling their own goals, deadlines, and expectations from leadership. The more you understand what they’re focused on and what pressures they’re under, the easier it is to connect your work to what matters most and anticipate what they’ll need.

Communication: Make your one-on-ones count.

One-on-ones are one of the best tools you have for building your relationship. Come prepared with your own agenda. Share progress, and also talk about obstacles, opportunities, and decisions you need support with. Use the time to surface what’s really going on, not just to give status updates.

Empathy: Remember they’re human, too.

Managers have hard days, competing demands, and blind spots, just like everyone else. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, especially during stressful periods, builds goodwill. Empathy doesn’t mean accepting everything. It means seeking to understand before reacting.

Build trust through follow-through.

Trust grows through consistent behavior over time. Do what you say you’ll do, flag issues early, and be honest when something isn’t going as planned. Reliability is one of the fastest ways to strengthen any working relationship.

Turn expectations into agreements.

Many frustrations come from unspoken expectations on both sides. If you’re unclear on priorities, how success will be measured, or how much autonomy you have, ask. And share what you need to do your best work. Clear agreements reduce misunderstandings for both of you.

Share feedback in both directions.

Strong relationships include honest feedback. Ask your manager how you’re doing, and when appropriate, share what’s working well for you and what would help you more.

TRY SAYING

“I really appreciated how you walked me through that decision last week. More context like that helps me do my best work.”

The Bottom Line

A strong relationship with your manager doesn’t happen by accident. By adapting to their style, understanding their priorities, communicating openly, and showing empathy, you can build a partnership that supports your success and makes work more rewarding.
