About coaching
What is coaching?
Coaching is a partnership that helps you think through challenges, clarify your goals, and decide on your next steps at work. Rather than telling you what to do, a coach asks thoughtful questions that help you uncover your own priorities and options, then supports you as you put your ideas into action.
How is coaching different from therapy?
Coaching is focused on your work life, your growth, and moving forward. It helps with things like communication, relationships, career decisions, stress, and leadership. Therapy is a clinical form of support that often explores past experiences and mental health. If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis or need clinical care, please reach out to a healthcare provider or your company’s Employee Assistance Program.
How is coaching different from mentoring?
A mentor shares advice based on their own experience. A coach helps you find your own answers. Coaches may share perspectives, but the decisions are always yours.
What can I talk to a coach about?
Almost anything related to your work life. People bring topics like working with their manager, preparing for a tough conversation, handling feedback, managing stress, navigating change, growing their career, building confidence, and leading a team. For ideas, see our guide, “What Can I Talk to a Coach About?”
Does my challenge need to be serious to try coaching?
Not at all. Coaching is just as helpful for planning and growth as it is for tough moments. You can bring a big career question or a single upcoming meeting.
Is coaching only for managers or senior leaders?
No. Coaching is for people at every level, whether you’re early in your career, a new manager, or an experienced leader.
Does my coach need to understand my job?
No. Coaching focuses on the human side of work, like communication, relationships, decision-making, and stress, which applies across every role and industry. Your coach will ask for the context they need.
Will one session actually help?
Yes, it can. Many people leave a single session with more clarity and a concrete plan. You can start with one topic and decide from there whether to keep going.
Is it okay if I don’t know what I want to talk about?
Absolutely. Many people use their first session as an introduction, a chance to meet their coach and figure out what they’d like to focus on together.
About your coach
Can I choose a coach who shares my identity or experience?
Yes. When you book, you can request a coach who shares up to two of the following: race or ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ identity, and gender. If you’d like to be matched on something else, like being neurodivergent or a working parent, email support@workbravely.com, and our team will help you find the right match.
What if my coach isn’t the right fit?
That’s completely okay. You can change coaches as many times as you need until you find someone you connect with.
What languages is coaching available in?
Bravely offers coaching in more than 30 languages.
Booking and sessions
How do I book a session?
Right here at app.workbravely.com. Choose a time that works for you, and you’re all set.
How soon can I get a session?
You can typically find a session within four hours of when you need it.
How long is a session?
Sessions are 45 minutes, but they can be shorter if you need. If you only have time for a quick conversation, that’s okay.
Are sessions by video or phone?
Whichever you prefer. You can choose phone or video.
How many sessions can I have?
The number of sessions available varies by company. If you have questions about your allotment, reach out to your HR team.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
Plans change, and we understand. We ask that you reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours before your session. Your coach spends time preparing for each conversation, so advance notice means a lot. You’ll get reminders by email and text three days and 24 hours before your session, with an easy link to reschedule if you need to.
If something comes up within 12 hours of your session, you won’t be able to change it in the app. Instead, contact our support team at support@workbravely.com, and we’ll help. Please use late changes only when absolutely necessary. Frequent late changes or missed sessions may limit your access to coaching.
Privacy and cost
Is coaching confidential? Will my employer know what I talk about?
Yes, what you discuss in your sessions is always confidential. Your coach won’t share the content of your conversations with your employer. To help your organization understand how coaching is being used, Bravely does share aggregated insights, like the overall topics people are focusing on across the company (for example, “25% of sessions this month were about stress”). These insights never identify you or what you personally discussed.
Does coaching cost me anything?
No. Coaching is free for you to use.
Other resources
Where can I find more resources?
The Bravely library includes articles, guides, and worksheets on the topics people bring to coaching most often, from feedback and performance reviews to stress, career growth, and relationships at work.
