After Your First Session: How to Keep the Momentum Going

You’ve had your first coaching session. Maybe you left with a clear plan, a new way of looking at something, or simply the relief of finally talking it through. Maybe you’re still processing.

Whatever you’re feeling, here’s what matters next: coaching creates the most impact when the insights from a session carry into your everyday work. A few simple habits can help you turn a good conversation into lasting change.

Capture your takeaways while they’re fresh

Within a day of your session, take five minutes to jot down what you discussed, what stood out, and anything you decided to try. You don’t need to write much. A few lines is enough. Insights from a meaningful conversation can fade quickly, and writing them down helps them stick.

Pick one small action to start with

If you left with several ideas, choose just one to act on first. Maybe it’s scheduling a conversation you’ve been avoiding, trying a new way to prioritize your week, or practicing a different approach in your next meeting. Starting small makes it much more likely that you’ll follow through.

Notice what happens

As you try new approaches, pay attention to the results. What felt different? What went well? What was harder than expected? Even small observations are valuable. They give you and your coach something concrete to build on.

Give yourself some grace

New habits take time, and not every experiment will go smoothly. If something doesn’t work the way you hoped, that’s not a setback. It’s useful information. Growth rarely happens in a straight line.

Bring your updates to your next session

Coaching works best as a continuing conversation. At your next session, share what you tried, what you noticed, and what’s come up since you last talked. That helps your coach pick up right where you left off and go deeper.

A few questions to think about before your next session:

What did I try since our last conversation?

What surprised me?

What felt harder than I expected?

What do I want to focus on next?

Book your next session while momentum is high

It’s easy to let the days slip by once work gets busy. Scheduling your next session soon after your first helps keep your progress going and gives you something to work toward.

Explore between sessions

The Bravely library is full of articles, guides, and worksheets on the topics people bring to coaching most often. Browsing resources related to what you discussed can reinforce what you’re working on and spark new ideas for your next conversation.
