Thirty percent of new hires quit within the first 90 days. Here’s how Bravely helps support new employees

According to a survey from recruiting platform Jobvite, 30% of new employees leave their jobs within the first 90 days of getting hired. Why? Forty-three percent say that their role doesn’t meet the expectations that had been set for them, while 32% blame company culture and 34% report that an incident drove them away. The result, of course, impacts the bottom line: it costs companies almost twice an employee’s salary to replace them.

So how can you make sure that you’re setting up new hires for success on day one? Here’s how we can help.

Navigating company culture

Navigating a new culture and unfamiliar norms can be difficult for new hires — especially those who are new to the workforce or have just made a major transition (like moving from a large, established company to a fast-growing startup). We help people learn how to identify organizational “cues” so that they can understand how people operate, why decisions are made the way they are, and how company values are applied on a day-to-day basis.

Building strong relationships

As the saying goes, people leave their managers — not their companies. That’s why we work with employees to help them identify their boss’s management and communication style, and learn what it means to “manage up” (and how to do it effectively). Most importantly, they encourage people to think about the relationship with their manager as a partnership — one that requires energy and effort from both sides.

Identifying “early wins”

People are constantly looking for ways to impress their managers, and that’s especially true when it comes to first impressions. We work with employees to help them determine what it means to succeed at their company, on their team, and in their role — and what they can do to get there. Oftentimes this involves teaching people how to translate their organization’s objectives and key results (OKRs) into tangible activities.

Understanding expectations

New hires need to both understand what kinds of expectations have been set for them, and feel comfortable communicating the things that they expect from others. We help employees gain clarity around their role and responsibilities (it’s all about being on the same page as your manager and teammates), and set boundaries that set them up for success in the short term and long term.

In all these cases, Bravely sessions help employees develop the confidence they need to have the kinds of conversations that often feel easier to avoid. That’s why we say that Bravely helps people close the Conversation Gap — encouraging them to engage in critical dialogue with their managers, colleagues, and direct reports.
